No-Gi Grappling

Submission grappling without the gi — fast, technical, and evolving

No-Gi Grappling

No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu is a modern, high-intensity grappling system practiced without the traditional kimono.

It blends elements of wrestling, clinch control, and submission fighting — with a growing emphasis on the leg-lock game.

The Danaher Death Squad — once the most feared No-Gi team in the world — dominated through mastery of leg-locks.

Once frowned upon by traditionalists, leg attacks like heel hooks and knee reaps are now fully accepted in top-tier No-Gi competition. The International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) has formally included them in advanced divisions — and clubs like ours are leading the way by teaching them responsibly, early.

The wider no-gi competition circuit is incredibly exciting to watch. It is instrumental in the evolution and growing popularity of the sport.

Professor Andrew

At The Fighting Arts Academy, our No-Gi program is led by Professor Andrew — a black belt and dedicated No-Gi specialist.

He’s the founder of 50/50 Lockers (a UK-based grappling gear brand), and a regular face at 10th Planet London.

Andrew is known for his deep technical knowledge, especially around the leg-lock and back-take systems that dominate today’s submission grappling game.

He builds fighters who are sharp, safe, and confident in every position — whether they’re training for fun or preparing to compete.

Whether you’ve never grappled before or you’re coming from a Gi background, we’ll help you adapt to the pace and feel of No-Gi — with positional drills, live rounds, and plenty of coaching.

We train without ego, with controlled intensity, and with a focus on helping everyone grow.

What should I wear to a No-Gi class?

A clean rashguard and shorts (no pockets, zips, or metal). If you don’t have one yet, a long-sleeve athletic top and leggings and/or shorts work fine. Our new starters checklist should help and we also offer great discounts on the gear from 5050Lockers!

Do I need experience with Gi BJJ first?

Not at all. We welcome complete beginners in No-Gi — you’ll learn takedowns, escapes, submissions, and positional control from day one.

Will I learn leg locks?

Yes — safely and progressively. You’ll be taught when they’re appropriate, how to apply them responsibly, and how to defend them well.
